Frequently Asked Questions

Can my friend, relative or travel agent translate my documents into Spanish?

No. Translations can only be done by our office or a Certified Translator (member of a Provincial Association of Translators). In Ontario, the association is called ATIO. It is done this way to ensure a quality professional translation. However our translation rates are similar to those of a Certified Translator and you have the convenience that everything is done at the same place in shorter time.

How early can I start the process of legalization and translation of my documents?

Although the documents once done do not have an expiry date, it is recommended that you do not start the process too early in advance to avoid any last minute changes (i.e. wedding date, hotel name, etc). You can start maximum 3 months in advance.

I have been told that I do not need to translate or legalize my birth certificate, is that true?

The birth certificate has to be translated always, that is a country requirement. Most hotels now require the birth certificates to be legalized as well. There are still a few hotels that will tell you not to do it. Our requirements page indicates the costs not including the legalization of birth certificates; therefore you have to add the costs of legalization to the column payable for legalizations if necessary.

One of us was born in a Spanish speaking country and has a birth certificate in Spanish. Does it make a difference in price?

Yes. Please deduct one translation fee.

I already processed my documents with you but there has been a change in date/hotel/city, what do I do?

We can do a correction at a fraction of the original cost. Please contact us for details and further information.

I am getting married to a Dominican citizen, is there anything special that I have to do?

Our requirements page provides information on costs for a case where one person is a Canadian resident marrying a Dominican. The requirements are only applicable to the Canadian resident. The Dominican citizen has to find out requirements directly in the Dominican Republic.

I got married a couple of months ago and have not gotten my marriage certificate yet. I am frustrated. Can you help?

We can help you by means of receiving a copy of a detailed e-mail from you addressed to the hotel with information about the wedding: name of bride and groom, hotel name and city, date of the wedding, wedding coordinator's name. We will reinforce your request to obtain a marriage certificate by sending a note to the hotel in Spanish and making them understand that you need that certificate ASAP. This has been proven to be effective in the past.

We have a communication problem with the hotel. Is there anything you can do to help us coordinate our wedding?

We can coordinate your entire wedding. We have standard wedding packages or we can create a wedding a la carte, as beautiful as you can imagine it. Please contact us for details.

I want an out of the ordinary wedding (I mean not a packaged one), can you help us organize it?

In the middle of a golf course, swimming with dolphins, on top of a mountain, on a canoe in a salty lake, in a natural park (for those animal lovers), in an artisans village, at the oldest ruins of the Americas (Colonial times). These are just a few examples of what we are capable of organizing.

Were can we get married in the Dominican Republic?

Tough question. How about practically anywhere in the island. Popular choices are resorts located in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Bayahibe, Santo Domingo, etc.

Can my relatives be our witnesses?

No. They can stand by your side but the people signing can not be relatives.

Do witnesses need any special paperwork?

They only need their passports, valid for three months beyond the date of return.

I have an under age child that is coming with us but will return with my friends/relatives. What does he need?

E-mail us to send you full information about this.

I got married to a Dominican and need help to fill out immigration papers. Can you assist me?

We can do the translation of the documents that you are going to need to sponsor your spouse. For full instructions and requirements, contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Can my documents be done in the Dominican Republic/United States?

No. To comply with the legal requirements of the Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, you have to legalize your documentation at the country where you live. We exclusively serve Canadian residents. If you live in the USA, we can translate your documents but they have to be legalized by a Consulate in the USA.

I am getting married to a person who lives in Europe/Africa/Asia. What does he/she need to do?

He/she has to process documents in her/his country preferably with the Dominican Republic Consulate. If there isn't a Consulate in that country, he/she can talk to the nearest consulate to that country, if it becomes too difficult and if he/she is coming to Canada before the wedding we could process his/her documents at this office in Canada.

I want to get tropical Dominican souvenirs for my guests. What and where can I get them, any ideas?

Ambar jewelry, rum, stone carvings, colourful articrafts, etc. We have a catalogue that can help you choose a distinctive gift for your guests.

I want to help poor Dominican people (children). What can I do?

First, let us thank you for being so kind and thinking in helping those in need. Smiles Foundation is a non profit organization that for years has provided health and educational projects. They offer: gift certificates for a donation, tours to orphanages or schools, donation pick-up at hotel and distribution, etc.

Can I rent a car and drive it in the island?

Yes, you can. Your Canadian driver's licence is OK. Sometimes tough it could be dangerous to drive in the city because rules are not respected as they are in Canada. If you chose to drive, drive very carefully.

I would like to take some tours while on the island. What can you recommend?

There many tours that you can take. Main touristic attractions are: Natura Park, Altos de Chavon, Samana, Isla Saona, the Colonial city of Santo Domingo. There are also horseback riding and adventure filled packages. One of the biggest tour companies in the DR Turinter can offer you exclusive tour packages.
